24-4-2010 Saturday of the Third Week of Easter Year II MEDITATION based on the readings for today’s mass. These readings can be found in your bible or daily missal. FIRST READING: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles chapter 9: verses 31 -42 “The churches throughout Judaea, Galilee and Samaria were now left in peace, building themselves up, living in the fear of the Lord, and filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit.” That new word “church” came from the Lord himself. In old testament times, some Jewish groups claimed they were the remnant of Israel, the “chosen ones” and used this word gahal (Hebrew) or ekklesia (Greek)to describe themselves. Jesus gave Peter his name which means “rock” and nominated him as the head of the new church for the new messianic age. “You are Peter and on this rock I will build my community (church)” Matthew 16:18. This new church of the chosen ones was emerging in a very spectacular way. The Holy Spirit was empowering, as Jesus had said, the workers in the new church to perform great miracles, signs of the new order, miracles worked in the name of the Saviour Jesus Christ, the founder of this new church. Peter heals Aeneas the paralytic and raises Tabitha Dorcas from the dead. “The whole of Jaffa heard about it and many believed in the Lord” RESPONSE TO THE PSALM: What return can I make to the Lord for all he gives to me? PSALM 115 VERSES 12 – 17. “How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? GOSPEL A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John chapter 6 verses 60-69 To the doubters who would not accept the mystery of the Eucharist, the invitation to eat at the Lord’s supper of the flesh and blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus said “It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.” He is asking them to understand that the food he is offering is of a spiritual nature, and in this way will bring eternal life. |
